Family photos on your wedding day are usually not a highlight of your day socially, but they are important enough that nearly every couple decides to take the time to do them. And I agree. These images take an important place in your family's history and you should take the time to do them.
The most important thing for family photos is that the lighting in the place your photographer puts you is flattering and even. On this day, the light outside wasn't that flattering (it was giving those raccoon eye shadows) so I put everyone underneath this overhang, which eliminated that problem and created stunning studio-quality light on each person's face.
After flattering light I'm looking for a great background. Something simple and symmetrical always does the trick! I love how the porch arch is framing this group, achieving all of my visual goals for a great image but also showing the style and architecture of the couple's wedding venue.
